On May 2, Amy Bevan wrote this article for Seacoast Online, titled “Seacoast Schools Have Healthy, Local Options on Menu.” The article mentions how recently the media, in the form of First Lady Michelle Obama and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, has brought attention to local food and school lunch programs. On the seacoast of Maine and New Hampshire, we’re ahead of the curve: local food has been in many of our schools for awhile now.
“One year a farmer planted a whole field of potatoes just for us,” Doris Demers, district food manager for Kittery and York schools, said.
Along with new excitement behind established programs, like the Farm to School Program, and much interest from both growers and food-service directors it’s a sure thing that local foods in our schools will continue to become more prevalent.
