On August 14, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Portland Maine Permaculture will be presenting the Cumberland County Backyard Locavore Tour 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a rain date of August 15th. The price for this event is $15 per adult, $12 per senior, and kids under 12 free. This event is to raise funds for a future home of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension at Tidewater Farm.  The tour is an educational, edible garden tour provided by University of Maine Cooperative Extension trained volunteer Master Gardeners, Master Food Preservers, and 4-H families.

Gardens are located in Brunswick, Falmouth, Cumberland, Gray, Standish, Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, South Portland, and Portland. This is a self guided auto tour, participants are encouraged to mix and match the gardens they choose to visit to their likes and dislikes. The ticket comes with maps to all the gardens and a link that lets you customize your own itinerary.

This event will showcase successful backyard “do-it-yourself” strategies for growing, raising, harvesting, and preserving foods to become more self-reliant in meeting your own food needs. Topics featured through demonstrations, tours, talks, and food samples include:
