Seacoast Eat Local Wants You!

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Take part in our amazing local food community by joining our crew of market volunteers! We’re looking for a few more folks to help with the Winter Farmers’ Market in Exeter on Saturday, January 8th. If you’re an early bird, join our pre-market crew, 8-10 a.m. — help farmers unload and see what they’re bringing for the day, and get behind the scenes as the market magically unfolds.

We can also use some help at the Seacoast Eat Local booth, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.  — hand out information and recipes, answer questions about local food, meet new people and maybe even learn something new about rutabagas!

If you would like to participate, please email foodguide@seacoasteatlocal.org. Even if you can’t make it this Saturday but are still interested in helping, send us your email to get on our volunteer email list.

Shopping & Cooking from the Winter Farmers’ Market

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

vege.jpgWeight Watchers recently updated their food point system to reflect current findings on how the body processes food. The biggest change — all fruits and most vegetables are now point-free. As reported in the New York Times, “Processed foods, meanwhile, generally have higher point values, which roughly translates to: should be eaten less.” One important source of unprocessed food is the farmers’ market, even during winter — come to the workshop on Shopping & Cooking from the Winter Farmers’ Market this Friday, January 7th, and find out more!

Shopping & Cooking from the Winter Farmers’ Market Workshop

Presented by NOFA-NH and Seacoast Eat Local

Date: Friday, January 7th, 2010, 7:00-8:30 pm

Place: Exeter Congregational Church, 21 Front Street Exeter, NH

You can eat delicious, local meals right through winter in New Hampshire. Come to this workshop and learn why it’s so important to support our farmers and eat locally grown food through all the seasons. Winter Farmers’ Markets are expanding throughout the state, which makes eating local even easier! The workshop will offer tips on how to shop a winter farmers market, choose your recipes, and make delicious, healthy cold-season meals.

Slow Food Seacoast Annual Meeting, January 9

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

sflogo_red-2.jpgRounding out this week-end’s events is Slow Food Seacoast’s Annual Meeting & Potluck, Sunday, January 9:

Please join us in on Sunday January 9 for our first potluck gathering of the year: “Celebrating the New Year by Remembering the Old”. How might we do that? By preparing a dish with something from the local 2010 harvest: canned, frozen, butchered, pickled, dried or root cellared. Shouldn’t be too hard to do but if you are plum out of ideas, you can visit the Winter Market in Exeter on Jan 8th to stock up on something local.

What: Slow Food Seacoast Annual Meeting

When: Sunday, January 9

Where: Stoodley’s Tavern at Strawbery Banke Museum, 17 Hancock Street, Portsmouth NH

When:

3:00: SFS Board Meeting

5:30: Potluck Dinner: Bring a dish with at least 1 ingredient that was harvested locally in 2010.

6:30: Annual Meeting

Meeting Agenda

Our Annual Meeting is a preview of the year ahead and an opportunity for you to share thoughts and make suggestions for events and gatherings. This is a great opportunity to bring your ideas to the table around potlucks, workshops, events and speakers. We are also very interested in feedback about specific Slow Food USA initiatives (www.slowfoodusa.org) as we are re-examining our connection to our parent organization.

In addition, we are seeking nominations for 4 people interested in joining the Slow Food Seacoast Board. Many of our current board members will be continuing:

John Forti and Alison Magill, co-leaders

Erin Jenkins, treasurer

Pam Angulo and Laura Spelke, co-secretaries

Amy Pollard, outreach coordinator

Sadly we are saying good-bye to our membership coordinator, Jenny Isler as she heads off for a new career! Thank-you Jenny!

We are seeking to fill 3 “at-large” positions and the membership coordinator. The at-large positions are open to anyone interested in working on one or more of the following areas:

……Planning potlucks and coordinating topics

……Creating marketing materials

……Coordinating larger events

……Blogging and communications

Board members commit to one meeting per month and assisting with our larger events. If you have an interest or have any questions, please email us at slowfoodseacoast@gmail.com.
