The northern shrimp season has arrived, and not a moment too soon. We’re reaching the end of our freezer stash and will be looking to stock up for the year ahead. New Hampshire & Northeast Sustainable Marine Fisheries has information about this year’s shrimp CSF posted online. The season’s been shortened this year — ensure your share by joining the 8-week shrimp CSF being offered by the Yankee Fisherman’s Cooperative:

Northern Shrimp CSF Membership Registration is open for this Season! As a participant in the Community Supported Fishery, you will be supporting the NH commercial fishing industry and a sustainably harvested resource. Your shrimp will also carry the NH Fresh and Local brand which ensures that it was landed in NH and is the freshest available.
WHAT YOU WILL GET
• An 8-week subscription to the winter CSF (January 9th to February 27th)
• HALF share of whole shrimp: 5 lbs per week
• FULL share of whole shrimp: 10 lbs per week

Freezing shrimp is a great way to enjoy Northern shrimp long after the season has passed. You can freeze them whole or peeled. Shrimp freeze best with a little bit of water added to the air tight bag or container. Before cooking, rinse your shrimp in cold water to remove any sediment that might be present.

This event marks the end of their series, “Our Waters, Your Future: Choosing to Make a Difference,” on examining local water quality issues and exploring ways in which we can all reduce our impact. The 2010/2011 Northern Shrimp Fishing Season is set to open December 1, 2010, and continue through April 15, 2010. At 136 days, this year’s season is a reduction from last year’s season of 180 days, with a smaller population of northern shrimp expected this year. If you’re interested in supporting sustainably wild-caught shrimp, the Yankee Fisherman’s Cooperative is now offering shares for the upcoming season:

DURHAM — A University of New Hampshire event aims to connect cutting-edge research on sustainable New England fisheries with recipes for New Hampshire-caught fish.
Fisheries Research to Plate, hosted by New Hampshire Sea Grant, UNH Cooperative Extension and Northeast Consortium, will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Cole Hall on campus. The evening features discussions by UNH researchers and local fishermen about their collaboration to help conserve Gulf of Maine fish populations. In addition, students in the UNH Thompson School’s culinary arts program will prepare dishes featuring two sustainable species, redfish and skate, for tasting and will provide recipes.

Rebuilding Great Bay’s Oysters
Cooperative effort eyes commercial harvesting
Every day the sun is shining Will Carey and his dog, Logan, take a 30-minute boat ride down the Lamprey River into Great Bay, where he drops anchor along the edge of Newington’s Fox Point.
There, floating just above the bottom of an acre and a half of shoreline, is an oyster farm where more than 1 million half-shell oysters are slowly developing to market size.
Across the water, at the University of New Hampshire’s Jackson Estuarine Laboratory, sits Dr. Ray Grizzle, a professor of zoology with a current focus on increasing oyster populations in Great Bay.
Carey’s farm and a swath of the bay’s floor tended by Grizzle and fellow professor David Berlinski are the beginning of what Grizzle hopes will become an oyster farm cooperative, where he envisions some 20 oyster farmers cultivating up to 100 acres of the bay.
“I think there could be a Great Bay oyster that is internationally known,” he said, adding the region’s mollusks are sweet and briny.
Grizzle’s dream is part of a shellfish expansion project under way in New Hampshire. The professor and his team are about to enter the second year of a four-phase project that will determine if the bay is as well suited for oyster farming as he predicts.

Eastman’s Fish and Heron Pond Farm have opened up their next season of CSF/CSA shares:
Eastman’s will be offering a 5 week Community Supported Fish share, with options of 1lb, 2lb, or 4lb filleted fish each week and three pick up locations:
Emery Farm, Durham, Wednesdays, 4-6pm
Exeter Farmer’s Market, Thursdays, 2:15-6pm
Newburyport Farmer’s Market, Sundays, 9-1pm

Heron Pond Farm will be offering shares that include 14 pickups (spread out over 24 weeks) and run through the end of March. There will be a lot of fresh greens all winter long, onions and garlic, winter squash, cabbage, cauliflower, turnips and a whole host of other winter vegetables! Plunge in and Volunteer with the NH Fish & Lobster Festival!
Hello all! In just a few weeks, the working waterfront in Prescott Park will come alive with the 2nd NH Fish & Lobster Festival.
This festival, a blockbuster last year with over 4000 attendees, features great ways to discover the local fishing industry, like seafood tastings prepared by top local restaurants, an Iron Chef-style “seafood throwdown,” boat tours, and folks from the local fishing industry to answer your questions about fishing today.
The Festival takes place from noon to 4 PM on Saturday, September 25. We’re looking for a few good local seafood lovers to help the event run smoothly! You’re invited to join our crew of volunteers. You’ll meet great people, receive a Fishtival t-shirt, and be invited to join in the post-fest party at 6 PM for fishermen, organizers, and volunteers.
You can volunteer for the full day, or for any one or more of the shorter shifts.
8 - noon: Set-up and check-in for restaurants, volunteers, and exhibitors
Noon-2: Greeters, runners, general event support
2-4: Greeters, runners, general event support
4-6 All hands - breakdown!

Yankee Fisherman’s Cooperative of Seabrook has announced a new CSF! Following the success of their native shrimp CSF this past winter, the cooperative will now be offering whole fish and lobster. Via the Portsmouth Herald/SeacoastOnline.com:
Fisherman’s Coop offers Community Supported Fishery program
Seabrook’s Yankee Fisherman’s Cooperative catches 2 million pounds of fish yearly, but only 3 percent stays in New Hampshire as the catch is sold to vendors in Massachusetts, Maine, New York and Canada.
“New Hampshire has this resource and it’s not being taken advantage of,” said Bob Campbell, manager of the Yankee Fisherman’s Cooperative, which has 61 members.
As part of its ongoing efforts to keep their fresh seafood local, the cooperative has created a Community Supported Fishery (CSF) program for whole fish and lobster. The eight-week program is inspired by Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), in which participants pay up front for a guaranteed stream of fish throughout the summer.
“It’s peace of mind, knowing where your food is coming from,” Campbell said.
Buyers have a variety of choices for the eight-week CSF including the catch of the day or lobster as well as options alternating fish and lobster each week. Prices range from $140 to $400 for the program, which runs July 10 to Aug. 28.

There was another recent article, this one in the Wire, about New Hampshire’s seafood industry and the effects the new regulations will have. The article, written by Matt Kanner, titled “Staying Afloat” came out on April 29, just before the May 1 rule change. Local fishermen commented on the projected terror the rules will have on the local industry:
“From 2009 to 2010, the difference in allocation for harvesting ability will be reduced in the vicinity of 70 to 75 percent,” said Padi Anderson, whose family has two commercial fishing boats in Rye Harbor. “It will compromise our industry—and by compromising our industry, I mean very possibly collapse New Hampshire’s fishing industry.”
The article highlighted many efforts being made to help support the industry in new and hopefully meaningful ways. This article also spent time discussing what consumers can do to help the fishing industry here in New Hampshire. From trying different, seasonal fish varieties to eating the whole fish there were several things mentioned that anyone can do.
